| Easter 2005 was a
memorable one for the corps at Chelmsford, including an evening with Helen
Shapiro. The songster contribution to the week was a "Bring and
Sing" Messiah on Tuesday evening, our usual practice night.
With guest conductor Clive Smith, and guest soloists, Felicity Wright
(soprano), Jane Hartley (contralto), Robert Little (tenor), and Richard
Walley (bass), and over 100 singers in the chorus. We were ably
accompanied on the piano by Keith Norman, and on trumpet by Andrew Wright.
People were invited to bring their own score, and sing the famous
music, including the Hallelujah chorus, or simply come and listen.
The 30 plus songs made for over 2 hours of singing, and as can be seen
from the picture below, songsters and visitors alike sang with gusto and
feeling. The sound was certainly loud when the entire chorus raised
their "hallelujah", and considering over half the chorus had
never met before, they sang surprisingly well together (most of the
time). It was a great evening of music as well as a spiritual
boost to holy week. |

| The
end of 2004 was a time of mixed emotions for the songsters: The
Christmas season was busy, with a concert on behalf of the Helen Rollason
cancer charity, when we joined with Enfield Citadel Band.
The evening was a celebration of music, and was recorded for
broadcasting over Christmas, by the BBC local radio station. The
songster offering included the popular This Little Babe, by Benjamin
Britten, and the humorous 12 days of Christmas, among others. |
The mood was
muted by the announcement, immediately prior to the opening of the
concert, that one of our members, Mervyn Dawkins had been
"Promoted to Glory". The members of the brigade were
shocked, especially coming on top of the loss of another much loved and
respected member, Lil Herring, only weeks before. Ironically ,
considering the purpose of the concert, both had succumbed to cancer.
For both of our friends we know "They'll
sing a welcome home"
|
The
rest of the Christmas season included visits to old peoples' accommodation,
two citizens' carol services, and our own Chelmsford Corps carol service.
